    Media Impact on Science Knowledge

    Get PDF
This year, the worldwide web celebrates twenty-five years of existence. Its popularity has grown tremendously and we now see a majority of the population utilizing the Internet’s various outlets to achieve greater amounts of knowledge in lesser amounts of time. The broad spectrum of media sources enables a greater access of information to all people, increasingly impacting their level of science knowledge. The current study looked to explore the relationship between level of science knowledge, preferred media source and frequency of exposure. One hundred thirty-five participants were surveyed. Questions from the Pew Research Center’s “Science and Technology Knowledge Quiz” were utilized as well as additional questions covering multiple aspects of science ranging from genetics and medical research to literacy and degree of trust in various sources. Participants’ science knowledge will be compared to the national averages, as reported by Pew, and organized into high, medium and low knowledge groups. Groups will further be assessed for differences on knowledge confidence, preferred media source, and frequency of science media exposure. Similarities and differences between local and national populations, as well as differences amongst science knowledge groups, will be discussed

Shared benefits from exposing research data

The Australian National Data Service (ANDS) has taken a national leadership role in implementing a national collaborative research information infrastructure strategy. The strategy is designed to build the eResearch capability of Australia's researchers through national initiatives and strengthened engagement in international initiatives. ANDS has been established with an understanding that (1) data has become an increasingly important re-usable product of research, and (2) research collaboration is fundamental to the resolution of the major challenges facing humanity in the twenty-first century. With the objective of increasing the discoverability of Australian research data collections, ANDS has built the Research Data Australia (RDA) service. With the benefit of an ANDS grant to help populate the RDA, Griffith University has developed a framework for collecting and exposing research data. Critical to its success has been the key role played by library professionals in both its design and implementation. The system collects appropriate metadata from research collections within the University through customised feeds from the various University content management and corporate systems. This system then acts as a central University repository to feed information in a standard format to Research Data Australia. It can also expose this data to University library discovery tools and other research information federations where appropriate. The end result is that this service not only integrates and aggregates data within the institution but also provides a key link into national and international open systems. This paper describes this project, including the role played by the University's library professionals, the underlying infrastructure and processes and integration with national repositories, identifier services, and with the overarching national scholarly communication fabric. It concludes with an analysis of the benefits of such an initiative to individual researchers, to the University and to the national research agenda.Information Services, Information ServicesFull Tex

Precarious living in liminal spaces: neglect of the Gypsy-Traveller site

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Gypsy and Traveller sites are precarious and liminal spaces to live. Insufficient in number and below standard in management and maintenance - the impact can result in poorer health and education outcomes, but also reduced community cohesion in society where conflicts occur over perceived values of spaces and of people. This article explores the precarious lives of Gypsies and Travellers who pursue a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle, and seeks to show how neglected or insufficient accommodation impacts on their perceived identity and exclusion. It examines the problems created by the neglect of the Gypsy-Traveller site and attempts to develop a framework for better understanding the precarity of such groups, who are seen to be different because of the spaces they inhabit. In developing a more nuanced framework of precariousness, particularly focusing on the overlap of relative and perceived precarity in liminal spaces, the article highlights the marginal position of Gypsies and Travellers resident on sites and suggests that control is still exercised by the state over these ‘ghetto-like’ spaces, sometimes through neglect and sometimes through a move towards ‘mainstreaming’ management. The article helps to develop an understanding of Gypsy-Traveller site management, marginalisation and control, through the lens of precarity and within a frame of emerging theoretical concepts of the ghetto
